I started at flume brook road which is just east of Dixville’s notch and is marked with a yellow sign. Unfortunately, my map showed very little of the road and there was no opportunity for field bearings due to the weather this morning. I walked up the road to the height-of-land, which put me fairly close to Cave. The bushwhack to Cave was straight forward but very wet. I descended from cave back to Flume Brook road and headed for the ridge walk to rice. There is a radio antenna not far from the col. The walk to rice seemed very long and there was a good amount of blowdown in one section. However over all it was easy. To descend Rice I began slabing towards my start point. Very quickly, I hit clear-cuts and skidder paths that eventually took me to a logging road that I later learned was Rice Mountain Road. The walk from Rice Mountain Road to Flume Brook Road was 0.8 mi heading west. |
