The Mowglis Trail segment coinciding with the Orange Road is unmarked until the boundary with Cardigan Mountain State Forest, where the trail uses an occasional blue blaze and weathered Camp Mowglis trail sign. I used a topo map to check where I was, as several logging roads and snowmobile trails diverge from the main road.
At the height of land (3.5 miles from Sculptured Rocks Rd), before the road descends to Orange, there is a large clearing. A small cairn on the left and a sign stating "trail" lead to the Elwell Trail. From this point on, the trail is well blazed.
I actually drove about a mile up Orange Road when I decided the washouts were too much for my higher-clearance vehicle. Very interesting hike.... fascinating cellar hole(s)/stone walls/well/etc along the old highway thqt used to connect Groton with Orange.
Unfortunately, parts of the road were muddy from off-road use. Very cool clearings along the way - I startled a HUGE turkey and found a lot of wildlife footprints.
Herd path to Cilley's Cave was fine; access there was slippery (and eroded) but doable. Very fun!!! Excellent views from outlook near cave. |
