I started this hike by hiking the Livermore trail from Waterville to Livermore Pass. The trail is interesting, offering cool views of the Tris and a “lightly used trail experience.” There are some substantial swampy sections. The trail is fairly easy to follow.
From the pass I made a bushwhack of Kanc, making specific effort to avoid the southeast sub-peak, remembering tough going in that spot. I made it up without any difficult woods. It was wet however, with damp trees and a wintry mix. I had heard from more than one source that the notebook was absent and therefore brought register supplies. I was pleased to see that the notebook I signed in 2012 was there, with entries back to 2009. I suspect someone bought is home to dry. Interestingly, my entry was recreated as it was not in my writing and not chronological. I am guessing the page got wet beyond salvaging. Thanks for re-entering my first visit. My trip back was kind of painstaking as I tried to make a more direct line for the Livermore tr., south of the pass. This resulted in worse woods and lots of slabbing. Ultimately, I hit the trail closer to the pass than intended and got soaked.
From Livermore the headed down Old Skidder trail, which is in great shape. From the Flume, there is a recently constructed, not yet signed trail that follows that spine to the Scaur. This is a great trail! I was surprised to learn that the Scaur trail is discontinued, leaving only Kettles path to ascend the Scaur. Given that I had plans to hike Timber camp, choose to use the discontinued route so as not having to go so far south. The trail was blocked by a pile of brush and numerous logs. My guess is that the forest service does not want us to use this route; however there is no posted prohibition.
Once I hit Greeley, I headed off to Timbercamp. There is a great viewpoint on the way up. Despite wet cold weather, this was a really great hike. I learned a lot about how the Waterville Valley trail system will soon look. I ran into Larry Garland, AMC cartographer who was working on updating the AMC maps.
