Comments
Comments: they were making snow along the trails that coincide with the service road on the middle of the mountain so we started up that way along the brookway ski trail then headed straight up walking boss where they weren't blowing snow. there was a heavy dusting on snow on the ground and good footing all the way up. we hopped on the increasingly obvious bootleg ski trail and followed it for a bit under a mile where it makes a hard turn towards black mountain. here we started our bushwhack. we hit some scrappy woods early, but a bit farther up the going was quite good following the ill defined ridge southeast up to the main east-west ridge east of the summit. shortly before the ridge we definitely got onto a pretty clear herd path which i don't recall on previous trips. this path continued east towards the peak for a bit and then petered out so we continued up on the path of least resistance to the summit. probably an inch or so of snow on the ground above 3400 and all the coniferous trees were covered making things pretty wet up high. we took full advantage of the snow and followed our tracks most of the way back out to the bootleg trail. when we got back to the north peak chairlift we hit both high bumps on north loon both of which have some sort of bootleg trail/herd path to their tops. we figured they probably weren't still making snow lower down so headed down sunset ski trail to pick up the bear claw trail/service road. turns out they were still blowing snow so we ran the gauntlet for a bit enjoying the heavy wet snow coverage often up to a foot of it. near grand junction we turned onto the picaroon ski trail and were once again on mostly bare ground with just a dusting of snow down to the octagon lodge.

having been hiking mostly smaller peaks to the south of late this was a nice taste of winter up on scar ridge. as i have found in the past the bushwhack up from the bootleg ski trail has pretty good going if you don't totally surrender yourself to your bearing. the views from loon were spectacular today. the ski area isn't wasting anytime getting a base down on bear claw. thanks to cynthia for a nice hike.
