Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Zealand fine of course. A-Z had lots of blowdown in places. I took out quite a bit, but a few large blowdowns (all now passable on trail however except the one between Tom spur and Willey Range) remain as well as some smaller stepovers and duckunders. It could really use a brushing in the vicinity of Mt. Field brook and on the steepest sections up to Tom. Just a couple blowdowns sawed on Willey R but lots tossed off trail. Still water running in Willey R up a ways from Tom where it is down to ledge. Just bits of snow and mud on A-Z and Willey R.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great day for the mighty tough little dog as he could run loose on easy trails, although he had to be patient with the trail work. Plenty of water on the A-Z to drink and swim in. He met one dog near Tom who was gone as fast as he appeared.
Bugs
Bugs: I got nailed by a few black flies while snacking on Tom's Viewpoint. Other than that they weren't a problem even when stopping for sawing.

Comments
Comments: I hadn't seen a trail report on A-Z and I couldn't remember what it was like having hiked it once with Shorty in '02. It is a very pleasant hike in the woods, easy grades, no sounds of machines, solitude, with a mostly decent trail bed. It is a great alternative to the usual routes. We saw 4 people up on Tom and then a bunch on Zealand near the TH. No one on A-Z. I figured A-Z would need some trail work and it did, but Pepper owes a lot to other hikers and trail maintainers, and it was a great day to be out. A really great day.
