Comments
Comments: The South moat parking lot was not plowed. We were first on the trail yesterday. We chose microspikes not snowshoes. Somebody had climbed in bare boys on Friday so we had a trail to follow for a while. Snow was 3-10 inches. Powdery. Halfway up snow was becoming deeper we followed a false trail to an Outlook we had never seem before. Now we're passed by other groups. Some with snowshoes some bare boots some with spikes. Near Summit we were in drifted snow, postholing some. One group had snowshoes and they pushed on to North moat. We made it to middle moat but stopped there as we feared we didn't have enough energy to do the Traverse. It was sunny, windy and cold. On the descent the trail was packed down a lot from the many hikers who had summited so probably now microspikes would be sufficient at least to South moat. Next time we do such an ascent in powdery snow we will choose snowshoes. But it still would have been hard work.
