Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The winter lot across the street was plowed and empty (we got there at 6:30 PM so I expected it to be empty). Despite being plowed it was a mess - SUVs and vehicles with all wheel drive seemed OK but one of us had a car and there were some troubles navigating the deep frozen ruts.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There really aren't any crossings but a few of the tiny streams that intersect the lower portion of the trail were open but easy to step over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There were a few blowdowns that seemed new since I was here a month or so ago but they weren't anything that couldn't be easily stepped over.

Comments
Comments: Did this one with the Random Group of Hikers as part of the "farewell to fall" (Moriah) and "welcome to winter" day of hiking. Between hikes we grabbed some food in Gorham.

The trail, as expected, was in great shape. We had hiked with someone on Moriah who had done Waumbek on Saturday and he said it was well packed out. Several in the group only used light traction the whole trip without any sinking or other problems. I used snowshoes the whole way because I wanted to use the heel lifts :-).

We left the lot a about 6:30 to ensure we were fully within the "winter" season. This forced us to use heqdlamps the whole way - while I've finshed lots of hikes in the dark and have started a few in the dark too, this was the first one done entirely in the dark. I will admit I enjoyed it so there will be more. We are able to say we were the first ones to summit Waumbek this winter season.
