I found it much easier to ascend with snowshoes up Valley Way - the upper parts have quite a lot of loose snow. I changed to spikes for Madison and Adams as it's very rocky/icy. Possible to just use micros. |

Valley way got some snow so it's NOT a packed monotrail. I thought snowshoes made the climb a lot easier. Trail is easy to follow and sheltered right up to the hut. It was COLD but much less windy than predicted so about minus 10-15 all day. Views were incredible. Wind was highest coming down Airline from Adams and a few minutes on Madison, but not that bad below. Beautiful day to climb these peaks. If you stick to the rocks on Madison, you can avoid the ice. Care is needed as the ice is too hard for spikes, but not enough ice really for crampons. |
