Comments
Comments: Sawyer River Road well packed out by snowmobile traffic, Signal Ridge Trail has seen a lot of traffic and route is firm packed (looks like majority of people are using old way going left at the arrow and around big tree that was purposely felled to block trail, to avoid long reroute). Carrigain Notch has seen less use and most recently barebooted (no postholes just tracks).Just after the big rock, followed MikeL's snowshoe bushwhack trail all the way to the summit. Climb up scree field and up was insanely firm and icy and here we decided there was no way we were descending this way. Relaxed in chair on summit prior to opening disaster canister, old book wet and terribly ruined, newer log was okay and there was inches of ice in caniser (put stuff in new plastic zip log back maybe it will help). We descended to amazing vista gift at scree field towards Carrigain at elev 3600 feet and then continued to drainage below Signal Ridge (we could see people up there). Followed drainage until snow was giving away to volumes of water and then cut back up and over ridge and down back to Carrigain Notch, just a little East of where we started whack. Best decision ever not to try to go back down steep ice. Snowshoed all day through mostly open woods with just a few pushes through some tight stuff. I changed into my skis that I carried up and then left at the trailhead on Sawyer River Road and used gravity to return, while Bryan and Rocket21 snowshoed back, today was a great day.
