Comments: i walked the well packed hancock notch trail for no more than a couple hundred yards then turned east to pick up the west running ridgeline of the peak. i generally sunk in a bit over a foot on the initial ascent through relatively open woods. once up onto the ridge snow conditions remained generally the same with deeper pockets and the woods tightened up a bit. though this route was never super dense it was relentlessly scrappy, pokey and grabby. once up on the sub bump i trended a bit south to hit one of the cliffs and get some views. continuing on there were a couple thick patches of woods and deeper snow into the saddle with west huntington. that ascent quickly became steep with some heavily loaded in snow which made for slow going up to the flat summit area. based on a previous summer trip i had a good idea where the highpoint was and found it with little trouble. though i considered dropping straight off the peak down to hancock notch trail i opted instead to follow my tracks back out which made for much easier going and a chance to revisit the cliff viewpoint.

i was in the market for a shortish hike today and this worked out great. snow conditions were pretty tough when combined with the nature of the woods. the view from the cliff top up to kanacmagus pass was fantastic today. as a bonus just below the summit i was able to get some great views to franconia ridge, scar ridge, moosilauke, etc. from some drifted over spruce and blowdown. great to be out.
