All trails in good shape for the trek. Thanks to those who previously broke them out! Snowshoes are the way to go at the moment. We did see some crampons and microspikes, but only on those who had come up to Carter Dome on the Carter-Moriah trail from Carter Notch. Quite a few face slapping and eye poking twigs and branches, but what can you expect with the snow pack that we've got?
Wildcat Ridge Trail from Carter Notch to Wildcat A was the least traveled of all the trails, but still in good shape. Mind the sidehills, as some places are only one snowshoe wide due to crumbling snow on the edge. Also, at the second switchback, when you're to take a sharp left when ascending, it looks like the trail has been broken out straight ahead; take the left. When descending, this probably will not be a problem, as you'll see the turn in front of you.
Great day to tackle the Carters and Cats, the weather was pleasant with a start temp of double digits ABOVE zero, plenty of sunshine and no afternoon snow as had been predicted. Thanks to John&June and Gary T. for hiking the Carters with us and extra special thanks to Schorman for hiking the whole thing with me! |
