3 of us were hoping to summit Passaconaway and discover some new trails (having done Dicey's Mill on the way down from Whiteface 2 weeks ago)- headed up Wonalancet Range Trail which was decently packed initially. From just above the short cut trail junction, the trail was no longer packed and we improved it as much as 3 people in snowshoes can. Trail was a bit tough to follow here, but doable. Snow at times crusty and we were only packing out 6 inches; at other times waist deep powder made for very slow going. Signs for junction with Walden Trail very visible. Headed toward Passaconaway via Walden and about .5 miles in we lost the trail. Could not find the next blaze for the life of us, despite much searching and using topo map and visible landmarks. GPS not working....Anyways, faced with backtracking our whole route or bushwacking toward Dicey's Mill, we chose the latter- so don't follow our tracks unless on Walden unless you know the trail better than we do! Next week maybe we'll just out and back Dicey's Mill.... |
