Peaks
Peaks North Doublehead, South Doublehead, NH
Trails
Trails: Old Path, New Path, Doublehead Ski Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 8, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Small parking lot was full (we started late). So we parked on Dundee Road. DO NOT park along Old Doublehead road, the police have put bright orange signs forbidding it, so no one will have any excuse.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A couple tiny brooks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Very good! A few minor blow downs. There was one, however, that I'm not sure even was a blow down, or a log off to the side that some one tracked to to have a seat. There were tracks over it, which made me think maybe the trail did go there and my path was actually a small herd path around it. It's hard to tell with all the snow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Many out in full force; well-behaved and having a good time!
Bugs
Bugs: Dead and buried under several feet of snow.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Two gloves along the ski trail, which some thoughtful person hung on branches. One is yellow, with openings for finger tips. The other is dark blue and beige. There is a red leash hanging on a sign in front of the cabin. We left everything where it was.

Comments
Comments: Things always look easier on paper! Mom always said do the harder stuff first and get it out of the way. So we went up the old trail to the col and went to the south peak first. Then back down and up to the north. Then down the ski trail. Did nothing but shovel all winter, so I was NOT in shape for this little hike. Nor was I used to snow shoes. And we did use the shoes the whole hike. It looked as though it could be done in spikes or bare boots, but they had a sign at the entrance asking hikers to please be considerate and leave the trail nice for the skiers. So we did.

Snow quality was great, it was a little sticky in the late afternoon sun going up North Doublehead. Nice hike, but beware if you are not up to it, it will take longer than you think. Nice views from South Doublehead, and a beautiful hike down on the ski trail. We want to go back and finish the one section we did not do.
