Parking/Access Road Notes

Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Skis
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All had bridges; some of which were a bit of a tightrope, but easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of kneeunders on Hurricane Mtn west of Carriage Path, along with several small bendovers. There were some face slappers/snow dumpers in some short sections as well. There were a couple of duckunders on Gorge Brook. All signs in place.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper picked up a lot of snow Brussels sprouts on his legs on Hurricane Mtn, because the powdery snow was chest high with his short legs. But I had treated his paws with Vaseline so he could get those that formed on his paws pretty easily, and when we stopped he devoured the ones on his legs as an unintended water supply. On Gorge Brook, Carriage Path ridge and Glencliff the trails were fast and easy; he loved them.

Comments
Comments: There was roughly 4-6" of snow on the trails, some new more drifted, but someone had recently snowshoes from Glencliff to Hurricane Mtn and back on a previously packed trail so that section was good. Going east from the high point we could see Steve's trough although oddly the lower we got the more drifted in it was until it disappeared. There are very few old DOC blazes on this trail, so if the troughs are filled one better be comfortable finding corridors in winter. Carriage Path's short section had one pair of snowshoes, but we ran into skiers on the ridge who were planning on going down the whole route. Hurricane Mtn between Carriage Path and Gorge Brook was a delight, with new snow over a packed base. All in all it was a great snowshoe. Gorge Brook was well packed from skiers; the Evo Ascents bit nicely into the surface and it was an easy hike up. Carriage Path on the ridge was ice on and near the summit, then drifted bareboot churned snow, but the snowshoes were perfect for it. Same for the upper Glencliff which was a fun and fast boogie down in snowshoes. No glissading but soft stable landings as they smoothed out the boot churn. We saw a fair number of barebooters in spikes, and all I could think was they were hiking in sand. Lower Glencliff on the hike out was a bit sticky and more packed, but barebooters were following us down. We hiked in some flakes early on, and sun thereafter, with mild temps and wind only on the summit, and even that wasn't bad by winter's standards. Lafayette glowed brightly in light above the clouds that seemed to cover most of the mountains in that direction. Thanks Steve for your trail pictures and information last weekend; it encouraged me to do the hike the first chance I got. All in all it was a fantastic snowshoe with my best buddy; one I had been hoping to do all winter.
