Trail in very good shape. Very firm packed track with a fair amount of post holes off to sides but not really affecting track except first few tenths of a mile. Was some scraped off areas with some ice showing through in the steep pitches around Bugle Cliff spur. After split track stays pretty well packed but a more powdery consistency and less post holes. There are numerous areas where you're in the trees, especially last 1/4 mile or so before summit. A lot of the branches were pretty stout near the top too and there is still enough snow on branches to drop down back of neck. Snow shoes on my pack got hung up repeatedly and eventually broke one of my straps just before Webster Cliff junction. Just before summit I made a wrong guess on track (there were no tracks visible in a thin layer of windswept powder and I had never been on this peak before) and found some waist deep post holes before regaining track at top. Several other people went through after me so hopefully my error won't be duplicated. (Where the tracks split stay right going up).
Wore microspikes all the way to summit but I wound up wearing my snowshoes back down to split just for the sake of not getting them hung up on everything. Nice having the extra traction descending but they weren't necessary. At the lower elevations the areas in the sun had some slight surface melting but track was still pretty firm. |
