Many of the steeper areas on the Falling Waters Trail are slippery and tricky to ascend - mostly due to previous hikers butt-sliding down. Microspikes did fine in most cases, but some spots were difficult. FW has deep snow all the way up (as of Monday AM). The ridge is about 3/4 snow-covered, but I was fine without the microspikes up there. The Greenleaf Trail down as far as the hut is mostly snow-covered (much of it quite deep), and the OBP is also snow-covered, including (a pleasant surprise) the nasty chute of feldspar about a mile down from the hut. Snow was so deep there that transiting the chute was easier than in wet summer conditions. I put the microspikes back on just above that area and wore them the rest of the way down. You can avoid most postholing by carefully staying on the track, which is not difficult most of the time, but be prepared to sink in soft, deep snow if you step off. I carried snowshoes and thought several times about putting them on to help avoid postholing, but they weren't really necessary, although I did see one person on the OBP wearing them. |
