Comments
Comments: Below about 2,500 foot elevation the snow was intermittent and usually easy to walk to the side. There was also muddy sections that weren't too bad. Bare boots with no traction okay. From around 2,500 feet to 3,500 feet was the transition zone where there were lots of postholes especially from bare boot hikers. There was melt water run-off in this zone. Snowshoes were best in this zone for flotation. Above 3,500 feet the snow pack became progressively more solid except on some ledge areas that were snow free (around Mt Lethe and Mt Hight). There was one to two inches of new wet snow on the Carter-Moriah ridge that was slick in the steeper spots. The section of the Carter Dome Trail that tracks around the perimeter of Mt Hight had many face slapping evergreen boughs.
Great day with good views to the Presidential Range and across the Wild River Valley. All the hikers were friendly today.
