Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, May 8, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking lots had plenty of room. We were the only car at the Passaconaway Rd lot when we started and ended.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: With the current drought, the crossing at Lucy Brook was easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Between North Moat and Middle Moat there are quite a few blowdowns. We threw stuff out of the way where possible.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The trails are fine for dogs except for the scrambles between North Moat and Middle Moat. Boomer needed help on a good portion of them so if your dog is hesitant about scrambles and does not readily accept assistance this is not the trail for them.
Bugs
Bugs: As the afternoon got later the little black flies came out. They were not biting but were swarming. Bug spray kept them away.

Comments
Comments: These three peaks are quite challenging for those looking to get out and do something as the snow continues to melt at higher elevations. The reward is breathtaking.

We hit some rotting snow at about 2700' on the way up North Moat that was unstable, not always unavoidable, and I sunk in to my knee at one point, but eventually it disappeared. Just before the summit another section of snow was hanging around, but this time it was stable. The snow will only hang on for a few more days in this current weather.

We enjoyed a Moat Mountain Iron Mike Pale Ale on top of North Moat while taking in the views.

We saw two other people on the summit of North Moat and then had the rest of the hike to ourselves.
