Trails: Welch-Dickey Loop Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, May 10, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Huge parking lot, well-maintained. Good clean porta-potties - ladies room is out of toilet paper. Considering the crowds this place gets, they do a great job with the parking lot and bathrooms.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Small ones, at the beginning of the Welch section.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One blowdown about .2 miles from the start of Welch. A few blazes up on the ledges have faded, but the trail is not difficult to follow. Nice step work on the Dickey trail. Good management on the first series of Welch ledges - for the protection of delicate plants. Thanks, maintenance people!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fun for dogs, but watch them near the ledges and bring water.
Bugs
Bugs: A few blackflies, but fortunately they did not bite. Yet.....
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Dog collar is at the kiosk. Dog's name is Lola.

Comments
Comments: We have not been here since the late 90s. We started late, so we only saw a few people on the trail. On the way down Dickie, we could look over and see a few on the Welch ledges. Like Princess said yesterday, for the amount of people using this trail, it hardly had any litter.

If you're looking for lots of ledges and scenery, a moderate climb, and no snow, this is the one!

One question - we were on what we thought was the top of Dickie, but noticed a very flat and wide area through the trees. But no visible trail or blazes pointing to it. Then, halfway down, we looked at our map (Map Adventures) and it had a small spur in that area. However, the AMC map and the trail head map do not show it. We'll have to go back and check it out, maybe in the fall.

On the descent, some of the rock was wet. It rained as soon as we drove off, so now there's more wet rock, please be careful.
