Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only significant crossing on this loop was at bottom of Howker Ridge Tr. over Bumpus Brook and this was easily done on wet rocks (could be tricky with higher water levels). Bridge just east of Appalachia on the Presidential Range Rail Tr. is being repaired (not in place). Being a Saturday (no work going on) I went down 10' bank and easily crossed brook and back up 10' bank on other side. If work is going on; one can take a beaten path out to Rt. 2 (just east of bridge) and you're almost at the Appalachia lot.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Mostly RMC trails today. No issues that I can recall. Some sections lower on Howker Ridge are tight and you could get wet going through in morning or after a rain.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a few out today. Water scarce on upper section of Howker Ridge Tr.. and some of the scrambles here they may have problems with.
Bugs
Bugs: They were out (mosquitoes, flies, others). I used spray at start and again on lower part of Howkers and wasn't bothered.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found quiet trails--3 college researchers seen at Log Cabin and then 2 hikers on Howker Ridge Tr. were all I came across from section before Gulfside on way up and departing Madison on way down.

Comments
Comments: Plan was to also hit Jefferson (reason for departing Lowe's Path and taking Randolph Path-Israel Ridge Path route to Adams). Light rain and lack of views led me to head straight for Adams. This turned out to be good as it gave me time to hike down Howker Ridge; which I've wanted to do for quite some time. The Lowe's Path and Randolph Path were quite wet and slick. I can't recall slipping as much on a climb up as I did today. Above tree line rocks mostly dry. Howker Ridge Tr. is a very unique trail. You encounter many different trail grades which are changing constantly after very short distances. Kept things interesting. Lots of nice views today although Rt. 16 valley was mostly clouded in. Lower section of Howker Ridge Tr. was very dry with more nice walking than I had planned on. PRRT was like hiking out on Lincoln Woods Tr. at end of day.
