i headed up the gated snowmobile trail which is currently overgrown, but with a herd path running through it which was helpful. some short sections of real tall growth and prickers. once the trail turned uphill to the left it got much nicer along a gradual down hill before joining the route of the old cilley mountain trail eventually running along under grandview. i had not done much research so did not know about the nearby old grandview trail so started bushwhacking up in a likely place finding mostly open, if occasionally scrappy woods up to the recognized highpoint on grandview. just short of the summit i noted an old road/trail that was actually the grandview trail. from the main peak i continued to the east peak with more open woods with some undergrowth finding a big pile of old firetower wood just above the col on the west side along a clear section of the old trail. from there it was a short climb up to the east peak with the old footings and miscellaneous tower related artifacts. i opted to go back out over the main peak and picked up the old trail which i was able to follow most of the way back to the snowmobile trail. i left it shortly before reaching it where it turned hard east and went direct to the snowmobile trail finding a neat old stone foundation just short of the trail. on the way back out i decided to check out the nw peak of cilley mountain so i left the snowmobile trail where it turned left and downhill and continued south soon picking up an old road/trail running by a series of stone walls. this moose and bear travelled old road slabbed below the summit where i left it and climbed in nice woods up to the recognized highpoint. a short direct bushwhack down the moderately steep slope landed me back on the snowmobile trail.
nice hike. very quiet and interesting woods with lots of old signs of human use along with copious amounts of animal sign mostly moose and bear. i look forward to making a return trip to climb the main peak of cilley one of these days. also made a short visit to elbow pond as some thunder and dark clouds rolled over. nice views up to cushman and green with lots of roadside campers. |
