Date of Hike: Saturday, August 22, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking at the large DP lot on Rt. 302.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only one tiny trickle along lower DP. This area is dry as a bone.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: DP is eroded in sections on the way up to Mt. Crawford. A couple of minor blowdowns. This route is mostly in the wilderness area, so no blazes apart from a few faded ones on the open ledges leading to Crawford. As noted in previous reports, sign for DP at the Crawford spur junction has been smashed. Beyond the spur, DP gets narrow in spots. Between Stairs Col and SMS are two awkward blowdowns, one a "sitover" and the other a duckunder. The climb up to SMS from the col is steep and rough. The SMS itself was fine and is an easy walk to the cliffs.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs, but carry a lot of water, it's very dry out here. I did not venture down to the former Resolution Shelter site to check on its water source.
Bugs
Bugs: Only a few.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: A nice day out to finally get to Stairs. The climb up to the Crawford spur is as grinding as ever, but then mellows out and is fairly flat or downhill all the way to Stairs Col. The climb to Stairs from the col is steep, rough and scrambly. The cliffs on Stairs offer a wide 180 degree view with Mt. Resolution looming nearby, and a dramatic view straight down to the lower stair and col. Looks like someone was using the tent site recently, what a place to wake up! I hung out here for a while and had lunch. I thought about doing a redo of Resolution on the way back, but didn't have the time (got a late start due to a breakfast date ;) ), so I'll come back another time. Didn't expect to see a ton of folks past Crawford, but ran into a group doing a traverse over to the Mt. Langdon Trail, and some people leaving Stairs as I was arriving.
