Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We crossed the North Fork of the Pemi River several times - rock-hoppable. Black Brook was no problem. We also crossed most of Jumping Brook without trouble. Also, we also crossed the Pemigewasset River at the former site of the government-mandated historic suspension bridge removal; water was very low so we could rock-hop. Any other time of year you would take your life in your hands or have a death wish, especially in winter.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Much of the logging railroad beds (even when parts of closed trails) were as good if not better than any other Wilderness Trail. We took the discontinued OLD Wilderness Trail between Black Brook and the site of the former suspension bridge. It is clearly seeing much use as the scrappy trees originally thrown into the treadway have disintegrated. Only a bit of deadfall in there. It is essentially open as there is no signage.

Comments
Comments: This was just a scouting trip to go deep into the Pemi Wilderness. Thanks to Amy P for joining!!!!

Anyway, we rode our bikes to the wilderness boundary and locked them up. From there, we hoofed it along the old Wilderness Trail past the Bondcliff Trail. From the north end of the old Suspension Bridge (roughly where the anchor bolts are still extant), we found a woods road and took it northbound. We lost and found it many times until eventually hitting the North Fork of the Pemi. From there we hiked the rocks along the river and explored. Then, we crossed the North Fork to the official Thoreau Falls Trail on the east side of the river to save time.

Then, at the site of the old (former) trail crossing at the site south of Jumping Brook, we crossed back to the west side of the North Fork and hiked up the old trail to Jumping Brook. Then we turned around and went into the woods back near Camp 22 and headed north on an old road which was quite indistinct.

Eventually, after 6 hours or so, we hit our turnaround time and headed back to the Thoreau Falls Trail to the Wilderness Trail, and crossed back over the Pemi River at the suspension bridge (former) site, back to Black Brook, and back to our bikes.

A nice dip in the Pemi at the Parking lot was TERRIFIC!!!! Took us just under 9 hours to do the 20.12 miles (including biking).
