Part of a group loop hike over the cliffs and ridge, out to Mud Pond, then around and over Abenaki Mt., then back behind the hotel. Myself and one other person only did part of the loop while the others went ahead. The climb up over the cliffs is a steady up, steep in places, with a fantastic viewpoint looking straight up the notch. We left the group about halfway up the ridge, descending via an overgrown side trail, which descended to an ancient logging road. This road led us to artificially dammed Artemis Lake, then to an access road which we took out to the back of the Balsams Hotel. It was interesting to take a look around the abandoned property. A building in the back has partially collapsed, and it looks like the rest might come down by itself soon. |
