Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Take the prominent logging road on the left just before the entrance to the Deer Mt. Campground, heading north on Rt. 3. This logging road is also just before a small bridge. This road a bit rough for passenger cars, but passable at slow speeds. Take your second left, there will be a blue blaze on a tree to the right. A short way up is a small parking area on the right just before the turnaround. The trailhead is directly across the road from the parking area, marked by two blazes and a log book.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Two crossings that were running pretty good from the previous night's rain, and which could be tricky if high. But I could safely rock hop across.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: As I understand it, this trail has been reopened, but in some places you wouldn't know it. It's very wild and overgrown in spots. There is a set of blue blazes at the trailhead. After that, the trail is marked with occasional flagging. There are many ancient bits of logging road which the trail either uses or crosses before meeting up with what I assume was the tractor road for the former fire tower. Mud and water were the words for the day after a night and morning of rain, this was a very wet and mucky hike. The route is a bit deceiving, as it it climbs then descends quite a bit before meeting the old tractor road. At the summit, I noticed a clear herd path and followed it for a bit before it started to get vague. Evidence of a former trail?
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: As long as they like mud! ;) There's also enough water along the way.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found someone who recognized me from Facebook on this mountain. Go figure.

Comments
Comments: I was going to hike Magalloway on this morning, but the weather was crap, with no visibility and rain on the drive up from Colebrook. So I figured it would be a good time for a walk in the woods to see the abandoned remains of the former fire tower. This trail is an attractive woods walk, following some lovely cascades and a 30 ft. waterfall in its lower section. About halfway up, the trail passes by a very scenic beaver meadow. Shortly before reaching the old tractor road is a clearing with some old artifacts from the fire warden's cabin? The tower remains themselves are interesting. The stairs and cab have been removed, and one lone tree is growing straight up the center of the tower. Nature is definitely reclaiming it. No views at all on this hike, it's all in the woods, but woods that are very different than what I'm used to in the Whites. Overall, a very cool hike.
