| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
plenty of parking at the Elwell Trailhead (across from Wellington State Park) - almost no other cars in the lot |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |

| Water Crossing Notes: |

|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
NO issues - nice mix of old and new trail signs. Occasional deadfall on the trail after all the wind and rain - I noticed one or two fresh ones but cannot remember exactly where. A few brushy spots mainly where old logging roads let the sun in, but, pretty easy to follow the trail all along the loop. New skidder/logging road crossing the the Elwell Trail near Bear Mtn - kind of tricky finding a way across the mud |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
didn't see many - not much water along the loop except at a couple minor water crossings and Crag Shelter |
|
| Bugs: |
a few buzzing around; think I heard one cricket |

This big loop has been on my list for a LONG time - ever since I saw the "Mt Cardigan 12.5 miles" sign or some variant of that sign YEARS ago at the Elwell Trailhead. I did this as a bike spot - dropped my bike off at the Alexandria 4-corners and rode back at the end of the day. Glad I did it in this direction as there is a 1200' drop from the Alexandria 4-corners and the start of the Elwell Trail - would NOT want to ride that uphill with a pack. Anyway, LOTS of wildlife evidence near Bear Mtn. Lots of elevation gain throughout this hike - around 6K' total - powered by a LOT of candy :) |
