After all the research and the recent posts about this bush-whack we decided to try an alternative route, from the West and starting from Twin Brook Trail. From the 13 Falls tent site after a good nights sleep we headed up TBT for about a mile then headed into the woods pretty much straight for the peak. Initially we lost elevation to get down to Twin Brook and find a suitable crossing. We were happy to find open woods nearly all the way to the ridge that originates near the area of the Redrock Brook crossing of the Franconia Brook Tr. At this point we encountered the nastiest wet fir band that all other posts speak of. This lasted for about .25 miles until we were about 300 yards from the summit. We tried to avoid this band on the return as much as possible so we struck out roughly heading due west, straight for Mt Garfield as reference, and managed to only encounter roughly 100 yards of nastiness before dropping rapidly and somewhat parallel to our ascent. we finally intersected our ascent line about 300 yards above Twin Brook and from that point it was easy to get back to TBT. It appears there is no 'good' route to this rarely visited peak, we were the 5th and 6th people to sign in since the fall of 2014. |
