On my to do list for a while, I finally got out to Wolf. I didn't think this hike's reputation was that bad on the way out, but holy crap there's a lot of climbing on the way back. Cruised over Kinsman Notch Peak. Met Pepper & Me on the way to Wolf and he gave me some more info on the herd path to the jar. The path is easy to miss, it's at a right turn on the trail (if headed north), with a faded yellow blaze on a tree. Step into the woods a bit and you'll see it. The high point is very close to the trail. I signed in, the last entry was from 11/23. From there I went up to the outlook on the east knob, not much to see there. Descending I did a short trip out and back to Gordon Pond. A very nice spot! Returning to the KRT, I did a short bushwhack to the north peak of Blue Ridge. Not 100% sure I hit the high point though.
Trails were very icy. I hugged the side of the trail in many spots. I carried spikes, but it was easier to bare boot the exposed rocks within the ice. |
