Trails: Slippery Brook Trail, Eastman Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 12, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: As of today Slippery Brook Road is open - I called the Saco Ranger Station yesterday to confirm. However the many sports of the road were a bit muddy and ...well...slippery in the afternoon. If these areas go through a freeze cycle or two I'd guess the days are numbered until the road is closed. Mine was the only vehicle at the end of the road upon arrival and departure today.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A small one about 3 miles into the Slippery Brook Trail is bridged. No issues otherwise.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The --> sign on a post pointing you into the woods of the Slippery Brook Trail is felled. There are several blowdowns - maybe a dozen or so, both older and newer - beyond this point up to the Baldface Knob junction. None impede forward progress however.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any.
Bugs
Bugs: Didn't see any.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: The Slippery Brook Trail is a tale of two trails: the first portion is a wide forest road which apparently is also a snowmobile corridor. About half way in the trail turns into a woods trail, however with no blazing or cairns - and the leaves covering the trail - this section might be difficult for those with less experience to navigate at some points. The Eastman Mountain Trail is well trodden with plastic yellow blazes. There are scant traces of snow/ice along this trail and a few of the rocks were just a touch slick but at no point did I even consider Microspikes.

I spent an hour at the summit simply enjoying the sun, warm temps, summit views and the sounds of silence - not to mention a little nap. On the way out I decided to zip the legs off and hike in shorts. I didn't see another person during my entire hike today. Walking nearly 10 miles to and from a fine peak in excellent weather and in complete solitude was quite a nice way to spend a day.
