Weather was chilly but manageable. 13F at the summit with negligible winds bringing the chill down to 2F, the worst winds by far were as we were coming over the shoulder from the notch and re-entering it. The winds were much more accelerated coming through Carter Notch than on the summit of the Dome.
Hiking up to the notch hut the afternoon before the trail was much more difficult with lots of black ice and flow ice, but with 6-8 inches the next morning it was far less treacherous. You really need micro-spikes or more on the trail. We used micros on the hike up to the hut and cramp-one to the summit and both were good calls. Snowshoes would be useless since there is still too much exposed rock, and the drifting is less than knee-deep. |
