Comments
Comments: We were the first cars in the lot at the end of Melloon Road. The day before someone had barebooted and then skied down the trail, Yes winter is here with snow! We used snowshoes in the 9 inches of fluffy white gold. We checked out the cabin since it was fake-locked and it is in rather worn out shape and there is no wood in the woodshed but the stove appears to be in working order. From the middle summit knob, thanks Bryan for pointing out the firetower artifact, we marched into the woods to begin our bushwhack up the ridge to the recognized high point. Good travels and enough snow to make stomping over hobblebush fun. Snow showers and mostly cloudy skies pervented line of sight but the compass pointed the way. At the big rock the cansiter is missing and with it much lost history. We both managed to scramble to the top of the big rock. The bushwhack was 2.4 miles one way and we followed our tracks fast back through the woods. Much of our route reminded me of the type of forest found along the Wildcat Valley Trail--good woods! On our return we over took a few happy tourtists out barebooting back down the trail and then we met a good size group of high school students dragging sleds and gear up to the cabin to spend the night. We would have enjoyed a sunny day but it was still a super day on the woods. Happy winter has returned.
