Comments
Comments: the road was packed out by various forms of footwear to mountain pond trail and could be booted, snowhoed or skied. after that the road was untravelled with 6-8 inches of somewhat dense snow that was great for snowshoeing. about another .7 or so we turned left onto gated fr17a. this is just before the gate and summer parking for slippery brook trail. the road was in good shape. removed culverts meant some ups and downs and some had running water in them. at the only notable fork we went left and continued up to the landing at the roads end just below 2000 ft. from there we took and line on the summit and headed up on old skidder roads to start then into mostly open woods on a fairly gradual ascent. snow depths increased slightly with elevation. the grade increased farther up and we wrapped around to the south of the summit on nice moose paths that ran through patches of spruce hardly ever having to touch a tree thanks to their years of walking and grazing around the mountain. eventually we hit the old abandoned sable mountain trail and followed that up to the recognized summit and a short bit beyond to a nice viewpoint to sable, baldface and eastman. we followed our tracks back down and amy enjoyed some skiing back down to the parking area as i lumbered behind on snowshoes.
great hike. definitely one of my favorite 3k peaks. loads of fresh moose sign up high on the mountain. views were limited by snow squalls at the summit, but still nice to sable in particular as well as to doublehead, kearsarge north, etc. on the approach roads.
