Comments
Comments: After a full morning of skiing the super conditions of Bretton Woods we went hiking! We headed over to Jefferson Notch Road, as we were putting on our packs three snowmobiles came whizzing by. I considered driving my all-wheel drive car up Jefferson Notch since there were tire tracks heading up but after seeing the snowmobiles I changed my mind. Nice wintery walk up the road, hard packed snow made for easy walking. While we were putting on our snowshoes an old Subaru Legacy came driving up from Jefferson and pulled into the Caps Ridge parking lot! Jumping into the woods just past the height of land and then staying on the north side of Millen we were able to stay in nice open woods. Fun day with interesting moose sign and lots of bunny tracks. Nice obstructed views. Mount Dartmouth was tempting but our late start, almost noon, wouldn't have left us with any daylight. Instead we opted to hike about a mile up Caps Ridge to the pothole ledge and we were rewarded with a grand vista, clouds hanging out just above 4k. Snowshoes were great for the bushwhack, about 6 to 8 inches in the woods. Barebooted road and Caps Ridge Trail, packed snow only a few inches deep. Nice fast walk down JNrd (skis would have been nice) and in our cars before the sunset--fun day.
