a short road walk up the well maintained dirt road led across a field, marked with yellow blazes on posts, and into the woods. not much snow down low. no more than 4-6 inches and the trail had been tracked out by bareboots. even with the thin cover it was condensed enough for good snowshoeing. a little bony in a couple places on the climb, but in the upper reaches depths increased and snowshoes were just the ticket. a couple areas with ice under the snow, but it is pretty well adhered for good footing. the trail is partly marked with flagging tape, but otherwise i noted no markings. just before the summit, where the trail up from three ponds joins, there were good fresh looking blazes coming up and for the last short stretch to the summit. noted some boot tracks coming up from the other side. from the various bumps around the summit area i was able to put together a couple good views particularly to moosilauke and franconia ridge as well as the waterville valley area. it was nice to revisit this peak having only hiked it once before from the other side a number of years ago. nicer day than i was expecting given the forescast from last night. |
