noted a couple minor blowdowns on the east branch of the trail the most annoying of which i cut out today. |

i hiked the loop clockwise. the trail is packed out pretty hard, but i still chose to use short snowshoes for traction. the majority of folks will probably prefer light traction. some ice, avoidable, below the excellent east ledges. a little hard snow with some ice where the trail then traverses along the top of a south facing cliff. the climb up to the summit had some exposed ice, but was still readily ascended. somewhat bony on the steeps descending along with patchy ice, but generally good grippy snow. the side path to allens ledge was probably the nastiest section of the whole hike especially in snowshoes. nice to revisit this great peak in winter. the views from various points along the route are fantastic. |
