| Comments: |
I guessed the Avalon Trail might have some ice so I opted to take this trail all the way to the ridge rather than descend on it - and I guessed right as there were a few spots of hard and steep ice above the A-Z Trail junction. I replaced the Microspikes with Hillsound Trail Crampon Pros just above the junction and was very comfortable with this decision. I found Microspikes to be fine for the rest of this loop today.
My visit to Mount Avalon was greeted with blue skies, abundant sun and no wind making this a very worthy destination in itself. I had the summits of Mounts Field and Tom - and their outlooks - to myself although I was accompanied by a pair of grey jays on Field. More than 30 minutes were spent at Tom's outlook in solitude simply soaking in what would be the last of today's blue skies. I saw maybe a dozen other folks along the way during this trek. A fun hike and a wonderful day to be out! |
