Comments
Comments: magalloway road had good snowmobile packed walking. some pretty minimal snow coverage in spots. this is a busy corridor so take care to watch out for snowmobiles. we walked magalloway road for about 3 miles to its junction with corridor 20 which we followed south to a point a short distance past mile marker 1 where we started a bushwhack up through a logged area where the snomo trail bends right. the usgs shows a road/trail at this location running up to the tower access road. we did not find that road in particular, but used a series of skid roads and open woods to reach a large cut just before the tower access road. 1-2 feet of snow off trail. there was a crust on top that at times was supportive, but i found myself punching through from time to time. lighter weight amy faired better and generally stayed up on top. from the upper cut there was a great view of magalloway and its west peak and heading towards the peak on a skid road we quickly hit the access road less than a mile from the summer parking area for magalloway. the access road was snowmobile packed. reaching the summer parking we very briefly followed the bobcat trail before setting off to west magalloway in mostly open woods. the snow was a solid 2 feet deep with numerous deeper drifted areas especially up near the summit. views from the recognized highpoint were phenomenal. we followed our tracks back down to the parking area then hopped on the snowmobiled coot trail. a couple groups of snowmobilers had gone up before us and a few steeper pitches were getting worn down to ice on the way to the summit. the tower steps were fairly free of snow and ice and the views were stunning in all directions. we also visited the cliffs above the bowl which proved extra spectacular in winter and we were even able to exchange greetings with snowmobilers way down in the bowl. we hiked back out to the highway on the same route. round trip was about 15 miles. the cutoff using corridor 20 and the bushwhack up to the tower access road worked as well as we could have hoped and saved at least a few miles round trip. we both agreed this was the first time we truly found winter this season. some pretty good snow at elevation in the connecticut lakes area.
