The trail starts out barely covered with much, and gradually becomes mostly hard ice through the sparsely snow-covered woods. At about the two mile mark, maybe a little less, there is a huge ice dam that has caused a detour a few yards up hill from it. This goes on for at least 1000 feet (distance). Once beyond that it is pretty much smooth sailing all the way to Mount Waumbek and back to it. Additionally, I don't recommend walking over the dam, as it may be doable. HOWEVER a single slip could at the very least cause a huge headache trying to crawl out of the woods you could slip into, that is if you don't get hurt, which is a definite possibility. Micro Spikes and trekking poles are adequate and the views were fantastic from both the Fireplace just beyond the summit of Starr King, as well as just beyond Waumbek's. |
