Comments
Comments: A little bit of everything. Started off being somewhat icy at the beginning of 19 Mile Brook Tr so we put on our microspikes. After the junction for 19 Mile Brook Tr and Carter Dome Tr heading towards Carter Notch, we switched over to crampons due to large slabs of ice. On the way up Carter Moriah Tr from Carter Notch, a group of 4 passed us where 1 person had running shoes minus any traction and the other 3 had microspikes. The 3 voiced their concern on lack of aggressive spikes for the descent down Hight. Carter Moriah Tr up Carter Dome had a mixture of some ice but mostly a thin layer of snow. From Carter Dome to Mt Hight, it was mostly snow. The summit of Hight was bare rock, mud, and pockets of ice. Coming down Hight was a combo of icy near the top, then snow most of the way. Great butt sledding terrain. We wore crampons from below Carter Notch to Zeta Pass. We switched over to microspikes for the remainder of the Carters, only dealing with one somewhat icy spot on the northern side of South Carter. North Carter Tr was a mixture of snow and ice. Roughly half way down Imp Tr, the ice gave way to bare ground. No postholes and not the snow was not soft enough for snowshoes. Traction of some form a must. Having both micros and crampons is very smart.
