| Comments: |
The Moat Mountain Trail from Passaconaway/Dugway Road to South Moat requires no traction. The ledges are wet requiring care to avoid slipping. Most of the distance between South Moat and Middle Moat requires no traction except a short stretch at the low point in the shallow col. The open ledges north of Middle Moat are mostly snow/ice free. There is a more consistent frozen surface in the evergreen forest between Middle Moat and North Moat. However, there were some bare ledges and soil in this section especially on south facing exposed slopes. Even in the areas with snow/frozen slush there is no need for snowshoes. The depth is a foot or less so any postholing during a warm day would not be a problem. Today it was cool enough to keep the surfaces firm. There are some small puddles from melting that were easy to get by.
There were many hikers to South Moat and Paige and a man from Illinois went to Middle Moat. I saw nobody north of Middle Moat. |
