Great day for a hike, the anticipated rain came very late, even got views of the Presidentials from the ledges. Not a very high-use trail, we saw one other couple hiking, other than that we were by ourselves. First 2 miles were a bit wet but no ice or snow. The ledges were beautiful, calm and with gorgeous views, But they were also wet and slippery with ice here and there, challenging especially on the way down. Then the trail turned to ice, first fairly flat and doable in microspikes, but then it got steep, and stayed very very icy (glazed sheer rock-hard ice in parts). We had just microspikes, and picked our way up and then down with the help of the trees. It was challenging, and crampons definitely would have been better tools for the job. |
