Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Your dog may have a difficult time hiking across some of the blue ice structures on Starr King Trail. Also, there were (very) fresh moose tracks and droppings near the top of Waumbek, so be careful and strongly consider putting your dog on a leash in that area. Given what we saw today and the info from other hikers over the past few weeks, that moose is possibly making that space her territory, and she may be pregnant (and therefore defensive).

Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There was a dog leash and a black winter glove by the trail sign at the trailhead.

Comments
Comments: The trail was very muddy at parts--the mud was often frozen. There was also a lot of ice, but easy enough to get around with suitable traction. Some of the ice, such as black ice, had a breakable crust, but others, like the blue ice, were thick, bulky, and tough to get around. Still manageable, though. I was wearing Hillsound Trail Crampons. Be careful of the moose that is wandering around the summit of Waumbek! I saw some (very!) fresh droppings and moose tracks.
