Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The York Pond road was in good shape on the paved section as well as the gravel section. Parking area for the Unknown Pond Trail has room for about 8 vehicles. There was 1 van there at 6:10 AM and 1 car there at 1:15PM. The sign near the gate says the gate is closed from 4PM to 7:30 AM. I arrived to the gate at 6AM and the gate was open.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The first crossing on the Unknown Pond Trail had ice on the rocks so I put on my microspikes and took them off right away as the first mile and a half on trail had no snow or ice and the mud was frozen. Two other crossings were easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Two blowdowns on the Unknown Pond Trail are walk arounds and a few duck unders on the Kilkenny Ridge Trail.

Comments
Comments: A really nice wintry day with temps from 15 to 40 with clear blue sky. It was windy most of the day which made it feel like winter. The first 2 miles of the Unknown Pond Trail is bare ground that was frozen this morning. As the trail approaches Unknown Pond there is about a foot of packed snow on the trail. The Kilkenny Ridge Trail has up to 2 feet of packed snow with a few spots of ice. Wore microspikes from Unknown Pond to Cabot and back. Back down low the sun had thawed out most of the mud on the south facing trail. I saw no hikers today. The views from The Horn are really nice. I like hiking to Mt. Cabot this way as you get the Unknown Pond as well as The Horn and The bulge.
