Trail was ice-free until about a third of the way up the Carter Dome Trail. We put on spikes there, although the ice was intermittent at first, and wore them for the rest of the hike up. A half mile before the pass there are a couple of serious ice bulges. Above the pass the trail is largely packed snow, but there are many spots with hard ice on side-hilling that require care (read grabbing branches). We wore crampons down from the summit to below the lower ice bulges. Mud down low isn't bad.
Great hike with Chris on a stunning day! |
