| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
There is a barricade about a quarter mile below the trailhead proper on Breezy Point Road. Mid way beyond it the road is soft and appears to have suffered some damage from a vehicle. There's a small pull-off for 2-3 vehicles at the barricade but plenty of room on either side of the road. Only mine and one other were there today when I left and when I came back. |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
There are a handful of blowdowns and large limbs on the Carriage Road - mostly below the Snapper Trail junction - including sit-n-spins a bit before and after the Hurricane Trail junction and one duck under further up. A couple of others encroach the trail but do not cover it. |

I encountered exactly three buzzing around but they were quick hitters. |

I found a penny on South Peak. In accordance with LNT guidelines I packed it out :) |

| Comments: |
Below the Snapper Trail junction the trail is wet and muddy in more spots than it is dry. This morning ice and snow started maybe .2 mile below this junction and continued on and off until the final ascent to the summit - though more constant from before the rock barricade to mid way up the summit cone. I used a decent set of rock spikes sporadically and they served me well. Like my snowshoes on many hikes this winter the Hillsounds got a free ride. In the afternoon these areas softened up nicely and I ended up barebooting all the way down. Some form of traction was required to visit South Peak today.
Other than one gent with a pooch who passed me early in the morning ascending I didn't see anyone below the Glencliff junction on either pass. I had South Peak to myself except for a trail runner who quickly turned around. Late morning there were a only a handful of folks on the summit when I got there which was surprising - but lots more made their way later on. I spent more than an hour soaking in the fantastic weather and views with hardly any wind. If you are looking for a fine trek to a wonderful summit sans crampons this might be it. Today was one of those days I didn't want to leave - even zipping the legs off for the trek out. An absolute beauty! |
