Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossings of Cedar Brook, Carrigain Branch, East Branch, and the first crossing of Shoal Pond Brook were easily walked through in trail runners, though the water is COLD! The North Fork above Thoreau Falls was a surprisingly easy, dry rock hop.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Pemi East Side beyond the wilderness boundary has a crown down in the trail, just around the corner from the gate, and a few stepovers beyond that. Wilderness, Shoal Pond, and Thoreau Falls all have innumerable blowdowns of all types, though none that significantly impede travel. The short stretch of Ethan Pond Trail I traveled was in good shape.

Comments
Comments: Had an excellent day of solitude deep in the Pemi. Trails ranged from dry, to slightly damp, to super wet, to frozen ground, to partially frozen ground, to mud, to ice, to spring snow, to breakable ice... a lot to deal with. Some will want light traction, especially in the section of Wilderness Trail between Thoreau Falls and Shoal Pond, where the side hill sections are quite icy. Most everything softening up in the afternoon. Thankfully it was a nice warm day, because my feet were wet, and not only from wading the crossings. Shoal Pond Trail was the wettest of the bunch. Saw one guy out backpacking on Thoreau Falls Trail, didn't see anyone else until the Franconia Brook Tentsite. Couldn't have asked for a better day! Nice to run into Dan and crew in the parking lot in the morning.
