A civilized start time combined with sunny warm weather made parking a challenge. Trail is dirt with a little mud until you leave the deciduous forest. Once into the conifers, the ice begins. Didn't need spikes right away, but it wasn't long, Ice was soft and grippy, due to the warm day and continued til the summit of Starr King. Several quite spectacular bulges of ice. Wouldn't be a lot of fun if it was frozen solid or if you didn't have some sort of traction. Between the summits was slushy and icy, but never really slippery. Lots of standing and running water over the ice, increasing as the day progressed. Significantly more mud in the afternoon as well. Another great day in the Whites! |
