Couple of blowdowns lower on trail easily stepped over. Looks like recent brushing near top; thank you to trail maintainer. Overall trail in excellent condition. |

Very little water on this side. Ice floes up high had dry spots to sides so they could avoid all ice. |

Hadn't been up from the Gorham side since Dec. 2011 so decided to go up this way. Was not disappointed. Extremely dry trail until getting above the ledge views. I started using rock (old worn) spikes around the 3-3 1/2 mile spot. Sharper spikes used for upper 1/2 mile; possibly a little longer. Hillsound Trail pros used going down in this section. Was not real difficult as ice was soft on decent but recommend some sort of sharp traction unless one wishes to hug trees. Lots of smooth hiking on this route; especially down lower and nice view ledges near Mt. Surprise. First time I can recall seeing Mt. Mansfield from Moriah so definitely a great view day. Enjoyable conversation with Slow and Steady at summit. Only hiker seen today; hiked up Stony Brook route. Nice first day of vacation!! |
