A few notes for 52wav hikers: In order to get both peaks with a single car, I decided to front load the hike by parking at the gate at the end of Ossipee Park Rd, across from the horse corrals. This meant that I initially gave up lots of elevation on Shannon Brook and then had about a 1.5 mile road hike before starting up Mt. Shaw Trail. The ascent is not as easy as might be expected, and without signs the direction is not always obvious at the several junctions. Follow the red blazes carefully, take a hard left at the sign pointing back down to Hwy 171, and at the big T hang a right. Once up high, all trails are signed and easy to follow. The complete loop is likely in the neighborhood of 15 miles but is made doable by the fact that High Ridge is a remarkably gentle, grassy trail between the two peaks. I'm no speedster, so I was out for a little over eight hours. And, yes, the views on both peaks are great. For maps, search "castle in the clouds trail map." |
