Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossings of West Branch of the Peabody River in the upper Great Gulf made somewhat difficult due to the lack of good stepping stones. Able to cross with minimal water on boots.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Great Gulf headwall not well marked. Infrequent yellow blazes and small cairns in a few spots. Had to navigate with the few markings, observation of a footway, and intuition. Some trimming required on stretches of the Nelson Crag trail although the trail is still in pretty good condition.

Comments
Comments: Lots of water above the Sphinx Trail. Water running down the Great Gulf Trail above Spaulding Lake. The Great Gulf Trail wove its way back and forth over the water way flowing down the headwall. Some times the water was running beneath the boulders. Perhaps halfway up the headwall the path left the cascading water to ascend rocks many of which were loose. Occasionally a yellow blaze or small cairn could be spotted to reassure one that the trail was being followed. The rocks near Spaulding Lake were slippery in some shaded areas. Despite the difficulties in trail conditions in the upper Gulf, the payoff in views makes the trip worth the effort. Plenty of beautiful waterfalls on the West Branch of the Peabody River. The usual crowd at the summit. The American flag was flying at the summit in addition to the State Park flags. Helicopter flying in the area. I think it was lifting construction material from a staging area at Camp Dodge to the Madison Springs Hut project.
